Dry Bones

Home Up

Ezekiel the prophet, lived in Old Testament times during the time of Daniel.
Ezekiel tells an amazing story of dead dry bones coming alive. Look at this amazing story
Ezekiel 37:1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which [was] full of bones,
37:2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, [there were] very many in the open valley; and, lo, [they were] very dry.
37:3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
37:4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.
37:5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
37:6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.
37:7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
After He looked, skin came onto the bones. None of these were breathing yet.

Next God told him to prophesy to the wind. Then the Lord told the prophet to ask the four winds to breath into these and make them live. They all stood up.  It was something Ezekiel had never seen happen before. Have you ever seen a dry bone? Did you ever expect to see the rest of the bones join that bone and it stand up. Even more amazing than that is to have it start breathing and moving and talking. Once something is dead, it always stays that way unless God does a miracle. He is the only One who can make something live. He gives life. Every breath you breath comes from Him. Those who love God have their lives in His hands. Your life is secure and won't end till your work is done.

  Imagine what the bones  would have looked like getting dressed and working like an army . Watch the bones come together.

The impossible had happened. God woke up and put life into dry dead bones. Only God can bring spiritual life into the heart of those who don't want to sing, or pray, or  read their Bibles or go to church.  Only God can bring a sweet gentle kindness from a violent teen who only curses his mom and calls her a jerk and never wants to help. Only God can bring thankfulness from the lips of one who only thinks of himself and refuses to do anything he is asked. Don't give up on someone you think would never listen to your love, and your story about God. Don't stop giving them good things to eat and doing kind things for them.  Go ahead and share with everyone you can. Only Jesus can help you say the right thing that will bring hope to the most hopeless.  Never be afraid to share the truth with bullies, with mean teachers, with gruff hateful people around you. You never know, suddenly like the dead dry bones they may come alive. Jesus can do this miracle. He has that power. Keep hoping and trusting that God can change the hearts of your children, and your loved ones. Never give up praying. As long as there is life, there is hope.

Jonah did not want to go preach in the wicked city of Nineveh. It was known for crime and wickedness. He was sure they were like the dry bones of Ezekiel's vision. He was positive that they would make fun of his preaching. When God called him he ran the other way. But while Jonah was wrapped up in stinky seaweed inside the belly of the whale, he decided to obey God if he had another chance. Yet still Jonah wanted to see the people destroyed and was angry at God that He waited many more years to punish. God saw people like Ezekiel's dry bones. These people wanted to be saved. They really asked for forgiveness. Jonah sat on a hill hoping to watch them punished. Jonah should have been teaching them how to become more like Jesus. They would have listened to seminars on how to live the Christian life. Jonah just sat on the hill wanting to watch people punished. We need to be sharing what we know about Jesus to help those who have dry bones find a happy life in Jesus.

Jesus promises us:

"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you will keep my judgments and do them."

"I will save you from all your uncleanness" Ezekiel 36:26, 27, 29

When the hand of the Lord was upon the prophet Ezekiel in the vision of the valley of dry bones, he was commanded to prophesy to the wind; and in answer to his word, life was restored to the slain, and they stood up before him, an exceeding great army. This figure was presented before the prophet to show him that no work of restoration can be too hard for God to do, and none who trust in him need ever say, as Israel had said, "Our hope is lost." {ST, July 26, 1883 par. 14}
There is so little real vitality in the church at the present time, that it takes constant labor to give men the appearance of life to the professed people of God. When the converting power of God comes upon the people, it will be made manifest by activity. They will become workers, and will esteem the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of the world.--RH Jan. 17, 1893. {PaM 154.2}
We are to preach the word of life to those whom we may judge to be as hopeless subjects as though they were in their graves. Though they may seem unwilling to hear or to receive the light of truth, without questioning or wavering we are to do our part. We are to repeat to them the message. "Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light." {RH, January 17, 1893 par. 6}
